The top picture could be rotated a little more (top corner more to the left).
As for the portraits the bottom one is much stronger. The top portrait looks just like a snapshot and the flash made the background underexposed...it looks like a photo anyone could take.
With the bottom portrait, I love the expression. I would do some editing though to change some of the background or maybe some of the color...the dog in the bottom corner is a bit distracting to me as I keep going to him. Maybe if you blur the background a bit more or change the color up a bit...??? Or do you remember how we did the high contrast editing in class for digital before? What if you did that on the kid and blurred the background a bit more. I will upload that document (with steps to my York web page if you want.)
