I have begun working on my still life piece and I think it is going pretty well. I couldn't find a sheet to drape over boxes like was recommended, so instead I used these mini shelves that I have.
(I couldn't figure out how to flip the image)
So I chose some items and placed them on different shelves and at different distances from eachother.
Do you have the original photo that you are drawing from? Can I see that? That will help with seeing if contrast/values are being built up correctly.
