Cultural Reference Question

Hey everybody! Quick question about the cultural reference project. Is it supposed to be pieces of art traditionally done by that culture, or a picture depicting a typical scene or custom of that culture? Or does it matter? I'm a bit confused, so if anyone could clear things up for me that would be great!

  1. I think the project is creating a piece that kinda reflects the type of art that they have and their cultures style...So for example if you chose egyptian, maybe you would paint/draw/photograph a type of pyramid of some sort as the main thing and then to add their style by putting something like hieroglyphics on the borders or something...(something that is part of their culture/history). this is how i interpreted the project, their history with your perspective/style to show it...anyone else? ...hope that helped/is correct

  2. Julianna is correct, but it can also be anything inspired by a culture that you chose to research. So you can find anything within that culture that inspires you and then create a piece of art reflecting those specific characteristics, attributes, symbols, monuments, clothing, patterns, etc. So it can be anything from your chosen culture...It can also be a collage of different things from that specific culture.

So for example, one student researched arranged marriages in a culture and did something depicting that (drew a woman's arms bound by rope showing how she was forced into the marriage). Another student went on vacation to Mexico so photographed people and different stone carvings from that area. Then collaged them together in Photoshop.

I know that leaves things open/vague...so please let me know if you have more questions or have ideas and want to make sure it works!
