I definitely think they could be used as straight photos and I think you could do something really cool with the cat and maybe do some enhancing on its eyes to make them really pop.
You can use these for straight photos for sure. Just be careful with your composition. A lot of these are centered and you want to get away from that. Use different view points, rule of thirds, etc. Try to have each photo taken from a different angle so you have more of a variety when it comes time to submit to AP!
I really like the texture-border around the edge of the picture of the girl - it's faint enough where I didn't notice it at first glance, but when I did I was impressed. I can't say I much care for the first one of the side of the building -- it looks washed out because of the sky, and there's no notable focus point. I do like the angle it was taken at a lot, though. ~Cam, former AP Art student
